10 Best Non-Toxic Bath Toys for Babies and Toddlers (2021)

Last Updated on December 23, 2020

So, why opt for non-toxic bath toys for babies and toddlers?

Bath time is a lot of fun for our little ones. But, the sad truth is that their precious bath toys are likely made with potentially harmful chemicals that are bad for our kid’s health and the environment.

Some of the most common toxic chemicals in bath toys include:

  • BPA
  • PVC
  • Phthalates
  • plastic

The problem? Bath toys containing these substances leach in our kid’s bath water. The same water that comes in contact with their skins, eyes, mouths, and private parts.

As per an Environmental Science and Technology featured article on Toxic Chemicals in Children’s Toys and Children’s Products, “Toxic exposures in children are a significant concern because of a number of factors, including a higher rate and greater surface area to weight ratio than adults, immaturity of organ systems, and rapid growth and development of organs and tissues such as bone and brain.”

So, if that is the current scenario in your kid’s bathtub as it was once for our kid’s bathtub, don’t worry… Today we will be going over great non-toxic bath toy options for babies, toddlers, and even older kids you can quickly replace with your existing ones.

All of the following recommendations can be found in Amazon with the click of a button and delivered at your door in a matter of hours (if you have Amazon Prime) or days.

Although there are no guarantees that any product out there is 100% safe for our children or ourselves, there are definitely products that are “safer” for use. Hence, significantly reducing exposure to harmful toxins.

For the purpose of this article, this selection is based on green and eco-friendly bath toys that are made with toxin-free ingredients as per the manufacturers. The following choices were also made based on personal experience with some of these products and based on the popular option of many other parents who have already purchased them and tried them out.

Bathtub Toys Cleaning and Care

Before I conclude this article I think is important we go over some basic bath toy cleaning and care instructions.

Yes, buying non-toxic bath toys for your little ones is a great way to keep them safe and healthy, but it is not all we should be doing to ensure they are protected.

As we all know, stagnant water creates mildew and mold, and mold could be harmful.

Many traditional bath toys for kids have small openings which allows water to seep in over-time. In turn, creating mold and mildew growth.

That is why all of the bath toys included in this post are either free of small crevices or have detachable parts that allow you to clean them thoroughly.

So, how do we ensure our kid’s bath toys stay mold-free?

Here are some general guidelines:

  • After each use, rinse them with clean water to remove any soapy residue.
  • Place all toys in a drying/organizer rack that is well ventilated to allow for thorough drying after each use.
  • If there are any bath toys with small holes or openings, remove the pieces that come off and let them air dry.
  • About once a week, clean all toys with warm soapy water and allow them to air dry.

In Summary

Bath time is a way of connecting with our kiddos. It is a time when we give them one on one attention, caress them, play with them, and set the tone for peaceful (hopefully) and serene (ideally) nighttime routine.

Part of that day to day ritual should also consist of bath toys that are not harmful to our kids and that allow them express themselves freely.

Also, remember to preserve these bath toys by following some of the aforementioned recommendations.

You literally read my mind. My son has been sneaking his toys in at bath time and I’m worried toys that were not made to be placed in water aren’t the best option. Now, I have some great guidance on what items I can purchase that will be safe, while also making bath time fun.

Thank you for your reply Kimberlie. My youngest child is notorious for throwing toys in the bathtub so I totally understand. I am glad you found this helpful. 🙂
