The Ultimate Organic Baby Nursery List (Non-Toxic Baby Furniture)
Wondering how to create an organic baby nursery with non-toxic baby furniture and organic baby items, you can feel good about? Then, no worries, mama… today I will help you craft a beautiful organic baby nursery you and your baby will love and feel good about using.
But, first…
Why opt for an Organic Baby Nursery?

It is no secret that many products and items we interact with daily, mostly in our homes, release airborne toxic chemicals into our environment. While some of these chemicals at low levels might pose little to no risk to our health, others might, in fact, have short, and long-term adverse health effects.
These airborne chemicals are called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
VOCs are widely used as ingredients in household products. Paints, varnishes, and wax all contain organic solvents. (Source)
Studies have found that levels of several organics average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors.
That is why it is extremely important that the nursery items we choose for our babies are VOC-free and non-toxic altogether!
What to look for when creating an Organic Baby Nursery?
When creating and designing your baby’s nursery, it is important to remember the compositions of some of the baby nursery items—especially things such as cribs, baby mattresses, baby bedding, and nursery wall paint.
Here are some standards for designing and creating your Organic Baby Nursery…
GREENGUARD Gold Certification (Furniture)
When it comes to baby furniture, look for nursery items that are GREENGUARD Gold Certified.
GREENGUARD Gold Certification is a voluntary third-party program that tests for over 10,000 chemicals and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
Baby furniture companies that are certified under this program bear the GREENGUARD Gold label. That ensures their furniture has been independently tested and verified to meet rigorous standards for chemical emissions and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde or phthalates.
In turn, meeting the strictest standards for indoor air quality and product composition.
Low-VOC Furniture Paint (Furniture and Paint)
When we envision our baby’s nursery, the color palette is one of the first things we plan. So we choose our beautiful cribs with the color of our choice…. but forget to ensure the paint’s (or stain’s) color safety.
Opt for baby furniture and items made with VOC-free, odorless, and non-toxic paint when creating your organic baby nursery.
Real Wood Nursery Products (Furniture and Wood Toys)
Another thing to look out for when making your Organic Baby Nursery Items List is to look into the building materials and overall construction of the nursery furniture.
Ideally, you would opt for baby furniture made of 100% solid wood. Common wood types used to build baby furniture include maple, oak, cherry, ash, mahogany, and birch.
USDA Organic and GOTS Certification (Baby Mattresses, Clothes, and Bedding)
Last but not least, in helping us put together our Organic Baby Nursery is looking for USDA Organic and GOTS Certified products. This will mainly apply to crib mattresses, baby clothing, bedding, and fabric toys.
USDA Organic. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Federal Trade Commission require that any article of clothing or fabric advertised as “organic” be made with fibers from USDA-certified organic crops, such as cotton or flax (used to make linen).
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). Even more rigorous than USDA, GOTS Certification is one to look for when purchasing nursery items like baby mattresses, clothing, bedding, and rugs. GOTS is a textile production certification that limits the use of toxic bleaches, dyes, and other chemical inputs during the production process of textiles. It is internationally recognized as the toughest organic textile standard because it goes far beyond verifying the organic farming process to include every manufacturing step. In fact, finding a GOTS Certification Seal in a product ensures a “safer” product than one with the USDA Organic Seal alone.
GOTS Certified crib mattresses are the safest option, free of harmful chemicals and materials.
Furthermore, as per EWG (The Environmental Working Group), always try to look for the following certifications when looking for your baby’s mattress as a first option:
- GREENGUARD Gold Certified
- Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
- Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)
It’s a lot to take in, huh?
Trust me I know. As a mom and a nurse, I’ve done my fair share of research and trial and error over the years.
Not only can all this information be overwhelming and intimidating, but also a bit scary. At least, it was for me when I learned all about the potentially harmful chemicals in everyday products we considered “safe” around our children.
But, don’t you worry, mama… Next, we will go section by section so that you can create an Organic Baby Nursery that is beautiful and safe for the baby and yourself.

Organic Baby Bedding
Now that we got the non-toxic baby furniture out of the way, it is time for the fun stuff, in my opinion.
Selecting baby crib sheets and blankets is so much fun because it brings to life the design you have envisioned for the last few weeks.
But not all crib sheets and baby blankets are created equal. Next are great organic baby bedding options.
Organic Crib Sheets (Fitted)
The Honeybee Print Fitted Crib Sheets from Burt’s Bees is a great and popular option (with a current 5,000+ five-star review on Amazon). They come in over 20 patterns and designs and are made with extra stretch providing a safer and snugger fit. It is also machine washable and dryable, which is awesome! It measures 30 x 40 inches, so it will be perfect for your growing baby to use during their toddler years.
Organic and Non-Toxic Rugs
Nursery rugs and playmats are other important elements when designing your organic baby nursery.
After all, before you know it, your baby will be crawling, wiggling, and rolling their way around the nursery rug you selected for their nursery.
That is why it is important to ensure we opt for non-toxic rugs and playmats that are safe and useful.
The Lorena Canal Rugs are a great option for any nursery. The Hippy Soft Machine Washable Kids Rug, in particular, is perfect for parents looking to incorporate natural and safe elements in their baby’s nursery. It is handmade from 100% natural cotton and non-toxic dyes. It is perfect for any nursery, measuring 4 x 5 feet, and they also carry a Pink Version of this nursery rug.
Another perfect option for an organic baby nursery is the Organic Weave Rugs. They carry a beautiful collection of luxury rugs for kids. Their prices are a bit more than most parents can afford for their baby’s nursery; however, their rugs are one of the few in the market that are GOTS certified!
That ensures that they follow some important organic guidelines, including:
- Sourcing raw materials from traceable, certified organic producers
- Dying their yarn using Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) approved dyestuffs
- Not finishing their rugs with harmful chemicals or detergents
Additionally, because of their size, versatility, and construction, Organic Weave Rugs can be a lifelong companion to any room design as your child grows.
Non-Toxic Changing Pads
Because changing pads are a nursery item that babies will be placed on a few times a day, opting for a non-toxic, GREENGUARD Gold Certified changing mat is a good idea.
One of the best options is the Naturepedic Changing Pad. It is a GOTS-certified organic cotton changing pad and a GREENGUARD Gold Certified product. It contains food-grade polyethylene for lightweight support and waterproofing. I also love that id built in the U.S.A. The changing pad cover is made with organic cotton and sold separately.
Another good option is the Cotton Comfort 3-Sided Contoured Diaper Changing Pad by Sealy Baby. It is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, waterproof, breathable, easy-to-clean, and made in the USA.
Organic Baby Clothes
We can’t create an organic baby nursery without incorporating organic clothing on our list.
Although most parents-to-be don’t opt for a full organic baby wardrobe, opting for some key organic baby items is a great idea.
Think of clothing items babies would wear the most often and opt to purchase those from organic materials.
After all, those will be the clothes their delicate skin will come in contact with most often.
Most used baby clothing items include:
- Short-Sleeved Onesies
- Long-Sleeved Onesies
- Sleeper and Jumpsuits
- Socks
Here are some great Organic Baby Clothing Companies you can buy from straight from Amazon.

Colored Organics

Colored Organics is another great Organic Baby Clothes Company also available through Amazon. All their baby clothing items are also 100% GOTS Certified organic, soft and hypoallergenic, and free of toxic chemicals.
Here are some common items:
Non-Toxic Nursery Paint
Last but definitely not least in our Non-Toxic Nursery List is Nursery Paint!
Household pain is most often one of the leading causes of poor air quality in homes. Most leading paint brands in the market today can contain up to 10,000 chemicals, including toxins and carcinogens. These give way to harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) being released into the air and polluting the environment.
Safer paints for nurseries are those that are VOC-free. Here is a good read on eco-friendly paint and what to look for, but here are two great brands of non-toxic-friendly paints for nurseries.
The Eco’s Lullaby Nursery Collection is a fantastic and popular choice. This is a curated line of water-based, non-toxic paint designed specifically for nurseries, cribs, and children’s play areas as it is a non-toxic zero-VOC paint.
Another popular choice in the zero VOC department is AFM Safecoat Paint. Safecoat paints have almost no odor during application and are odor-free once cured. They contain no formaldehyde, ammonia, crystalline silica, or ethylene glycol.
